The South Beach diet developed by Dr. Arthur Agatson was designed to teach the body how to accept the correct kinds of carbohydrates and fats in order to lose weight. The doctor understood the body needs to purge itself of its love of bad carbohydrates and sugar.
The South Beach diet is divided into three stages. The first phase is the most strict part of the diet. We take the body back to Ground Zero. Processed sugars are completely eliminated from the daily that. That means no bread, fruits, rice, pasta, and sugary snacks. The theory at work in the first part of this diet is that it takes you two weeks to make or break a habit. The idea is that after two weeks time your body won’t remember its sugar cravings.
A dieter that survives the first two weeks will find that Phase Two is less restrictive. One at a time, foods banned in the first phase of the diet can be added back in moderation. This teaches the body to manage sugars and learn portion control. Dieters continue with the second phase of the South Beach diet until they have reached their goal weight.
These third phase of the diet is referred to as the maintenance phase. You choose foods that keep your weight and stable level. But you make sure they don’t feel deprived. The South Beach diet book that I’ve linked below contains many recipes for the phases of the diet plan. So each phase has its own recipes and foods. Dieters are encouraged to make low carb meals. The diet is also considered healthier because you provide fresh vegetables and prepare your own food. However some of the recipes call for expensive ingredients.
For those dieters who have children at home it’s a great idea to add a starch to their meals. That is of course assuming that your children are at their ideal weight if not the South Beach diet is perfectly safe for them as well.
Hundreds of stores nationwide carry namebrand products at how the South Beach logo. In fact the South Beach diet plan also has its own line of snacks and frozen meals. However vegetarians may have a difficult time in the first two weeks of the diet because the diet is limited to meat vegetables and nuts. if you’re not a big fan of meat and vegetables the first 14 days might be very hard.
Exercise is not a main component of the South Beach plan. The South Beach diet is about changing eating habits and eliminating cravings. To achieve total health, an exercise regimen is half of the equation.
